A Pojangmacha street in Busan, South Korea
Pojangmacha
where you should definitely go in South Korea. This orange color tent bar is a
tiny street restaurant which is based on small tents or street vendors. There
are lots of street food such as tteokbokki, oden, gimbap, even anju which is
Korean food consumed with Soju (Korean alcohol). Since long time ago, Korean
workers go to pojangmacha to drink some alcohol with their co-workers or
friends after getting off from work. Koreans feel that they can get release
their stress as drinking soju with anju and talking honest stories that they
couldn’t tell. If you like watching some K-drama, you might have seen
pojangmacha scene at least once.
One
sad thing is that perception of pojangmacha seems a little different from the
past. For instance, all the street food used to be really cheap like $1~5 per
dish before, so people usually went to pojangmacha to enjoy their time without
any burden of cost. However, these days some pojanmacha are much more expensive
than just normal restaurants.
I know
there are lots of fancy restaurants as well in Korea, but pojangmacha has an
unique atmosphere itself. Sadly as causing hygiene problems and also COVID-19
Pandemic has been prolonged, many of pojangmacha are closing down these days. I’m
kind of sad because it’s also one of Korean traditional culture since long time
ago. So, Personally I hope that it won’t disappear at all. Anyways, what about
having a special experience when you have a chance to visit to South Korea?
