Basically, we go to a coffee shop to drink some coffee. However, you could be very embarrassed if you go to a ‘coffee shop’ in the Netherlands.

As everyone knows, The Netherlands is known as very open-minded country. For instance, legalization of same-sex marriage, prostitution, and even drugs. But, the legalization of drugs often can be misleading. Cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, which we usually think of drugs are actually illegal as well in the Netherlands. Only soft drugs like marijuana are legalized.

Do the dutch really use drugs in a coffee shop? Then, where can we get some coffee?
Yes, they really do! Lots of coffee shop
which are located in the Netherlands aren’t a place to have some coffee. If you
want some real coffee, go to a ‘Café’, not the coffee shop. Coffee shop is
actually a drug store that sells permitted amounts of soft drugs such as
cannabis (Marijuana). So when you go to an actual coffee shop later, you can
smell cannabis instead of coffee aroma. Personally, I hate the strong-smelling cannabis.
It’s just super gross.

Then, how come they’ve started to call a drug store as ‘coffee shop’?
Here’s the reason. In the beginning of the
legalization of drugs, they weren’t able to sell some drugs with alcohol. So
that’s why they’ve started to sell it in a coffee shop.
To be honest, as I’m a person who live in South
Korea where drugs are illegal, I’m kind of negative about the legalization of
cannabis. Dutch government, however, judged that the legalization of drugs
would prevent to be addicted. People might think that many dutch enjoy using drugs a lot, but actually not that many. In fact, there are more tourist and immigrants than dutch in a coffee shop. That means, even though using drugs is legal in Holland, not all dutch do cannabis.
So remember, don’t go to a coffee shop if
you want to get some coffee in the Netherlands instead, go to a café!
