As
COVID-19 pandemic has been prolonged since beginning of this year, we’re stuck
at home and get bored easily. So, many Korean have started to find something to
do at home. As a result, making dalgona coffee became kind of a trend in South Korea. As many Koreans uploaded the recipe of dalgona coffee on thier youtube channe, making
dalgona coffee challenge started to spread all over the world.
What’s Dalgona?
Dalgona
is a Korean street food that is kind of caramel snack made by mixing sugar and
baking soda and heating it over fire. When I was younger, I used to buy a piece
of dalgona on a street or go to a stationery shop which sold ready-made dalgona
at that time. Probably, dalgona is a snack of memories to Koreans. Actually,
the brown whipped cream from dalgona coffee is not real dagona. Its texture and
color are very similar to dalgona so that’s why Korean started to call “Dalgona
Coffee”

It’s
very simple to make Dalgona Coffee. You just need 4 ingredients. Instant coffee
(or espresso powder), sugur, hot water and milk. The most important thing is
each ingredients’ ratio!
Step
1. Add instant coffee (or espresso powder), sugar, hot water to a wide bowl.
Here the ratio of all ingredients is 1:1:1. * If you want a perfect creamy whipped
cream like many Korean video, this 1:1:1 ratio is really important!
Step
2. Whip the mixture with a spoon until it gets light brown and creamy texture.
Even if you can’t see any difference compared to the beginning, don’t give up.
Just keep going. (Actually, you can use an electric hand-held mixer which is a
lot easier than original way)
Step
3. Serve the dalgona cream on the top of milk.
Step 4. Before you enjoy, mix the whipped dalgona cream and milk! The whipped coffee cream is pretty bitter and strong itself.
